JTC U20 Team Announcement

On behalf of the National Ball Hockey Association of Canada and the High Performance Committee we are proud to announce the 2016 Junior U-20 Team Canada roster for the World Junior Championships to be held in Prague, Czech Republic, June 26 to July 3.

The Junior Team Canada Program will be sending 66 players along with staff members to Prague, Czech Republic to capture the gold in all three divisions of play.

High Performance Director, Steve Dockerty, who was heavily responsible for the restructuring which took place in the international program stated, “our squads will definitely be competing for the gold again. Even though our members were a part of the teams that won double gold in 2014 (U18 & U20), the NBHAC has been working hard to improve the program. We want players that will be part of the Team Canada family for years to come.  The High Performance Program has been established to create continuity consisting of strong individuals across the country with involvement in the various national teams at the adult levels.

Dockerty added, “we have a Mission Statement - To prepare and assemble a team of junior ball hockey players from Canada to compete for gold at the WJC. To field a team that sets extraordinary standards for competitiveness, sportsmanship and team continuity.  To create a ‘life experience’ for members of JTC and officials.”  He added, “that truly is our goal, to compete for gold, but also to set exceptional standards for the players and team officials.

Dockerty continued, ‘all three rosters were selected, not just on high calibre skills, but for their personalities and community backgrounds as well.’  Dockerty concluded with “The ultimate goal is to ensure each player has a life experience that he can take with him for years to come.”

Please join General Manager, Mauro Cugini, and Head Coach Barry Greer, Assistant Coach Tyler McClure and Team Mentor, Hayden Cole in congratulating Canada's best Under 20 ball hockey players and wish them good luck as they compete for gold in 2016 Prague!

NBHAC Member Shines in Net vs JTC

NBHAC Member Shines in the Net versus Junior Team Canada

TORONTO (From CIS web site with files from Hockeycanada.ca) – Defenceman Spencer Abraham from Queen's University scored the shootout winner and had two assists in regulation to lead the CIS men's hockey all-stars to a 5-4 victory over Canada's National Junior Team prospects in the first leg of a two-game series at the MasterCard Centre, Saturday night.

Forwards Eric Locke of StFX, with two, and Alex Saulnier of Moncton and Olivier Hinse of Concordia with one apiece scored in regulation as Team CIS overcame an early 2-0 deficit before relinquishing 3-2 and 4-3 leads of its own later in the contest.

The all-AUS line of Locke (2-1-3), Saulnier (1-2-3) and Stephen MacAulay of Saint Mary's (0-1-1) ended up with seven points.

Queen's goaltender Kevin Bailie was outstanding in the win with a 40-save performance as Team Canada finished with a 44-32 advantage in shots on goal.

"It's pretty rare for a defenceman to be called upon in a shootout but I think I'm 4-for-4 now in my career," said Abraham, a native of Campbellville, Ont., who played for Brampton and Erie in the OHL before being named the CIS rookie of the year in 2014-15. "I went to my go-to move, a nice toe-drag, and pretty much had an open net."

Abraham lifted a backhand past Mason McDonald (Charlottetown, QMJHL) to give Team CIS the win.

"Our goal coming into the series was to win both games, so it was a solid start for us tonight," said Team CIS head coach Shawn Camp from the University of Guelph. "We battled hard on every loose puck and we managed the puck really well. We gave ourselves a chance to win in the shootout and we're pretty please right now. Very happy with the overall effort."

Team Canada got goals from Mitchell Stephens (Saginaw, OHL), Travis Dermott (Erie, OHL), Julien Gauthier (Val-d'Or, QMJHL) and Anthony Beauvillier (Shawinigan, QMJHL). Gauthier also added a pair of assists.

The junior squad got on the board first, 9:21 into the opening period, when Stephens flipped in a backhand from the low slot.

Dermott doubled the Canadian lead at the 12:35 mark, but moments later Locke and Hinse replied with a pair of goals a mere 15 seconds apart to even things up 2-2 heading into the first intermission.

Team CIS took the lead late in the middle period; Saulnier took a centering pass from the side boards and beat McDonald high from the slot.

Two minutes later Gauthier tipped in Sanheim's point shot to make it 3-3.

Locke finished off a passing play on the man-advantage to pick up his second goal of the game, 7:22 into the third, but Beauvillier brought Canada even with less than three to play in regulation.

The story of the game was special teams. Team Canada drew the first three penalties of the evening, converting on two of those chances. But its own lack of discipline led to the CIS' go-ahead goal in the third, and nearly cost the team in overtime, when Team CIS started the extra period on the power play.

The extra space afforded from playing four-on-three on the international-size ice brought quality scoring chances, but both teams' shot blockers and goalies were up to the task.

Game two on Sunday afternoon saw Junior Team Canada win 5-0.

Canada awarded 2016 3vs3 WBH Championship

The National Ball Hockey Association of Canada (NBHAC) has been awarded the 3vs3 World Championships announced by WBHF Executive Vice-President, Jaroslav Melisek.   The NBHAC will host the tournament in Quebec and under leaders of the 3vs3 version of the sport, Coupe Burrows Cup and their administrators, Simon LeBlanc and Patric Ducharme.

The World Ball Hockey Federation 3vs3 Championships will be hosted September 20-24, 2016.

Simon LeBlanc, ‘we are very proud of the selection as we knew the city of Moscow, Russia, was also a legitimate contender but in the end, our capability and experience to organise big ball hockey events (Coupe Burrows Cup and Burrows Cup Classics) as well as the quality of our venues in Quebec were decisive.’

In his interview, Mr. Melisek mentioned that he considers the Coupe Burrows Cup to be the best ball hockey organization in the world for the 3vs3 game.  Patric Ducharme, ‘it is very flattering to be selected, but we have very high expectations of our own events and will make sure we meet all of the expectations. We feel like we have the leverage to make this event memorable for all its participants and fan base. This event will draw media attention and will be great step forward to promote ball hockey, especially in its 3vs3 format, not only here in the great Montreal area but everywhere in the world.’

Canada has hosted international events in 2001, 2008 and 2013 at the 5vs5 version for the sport and this will be the first time that Canada will host delegations from the Czech Republic, Russia, Northern Ireland and Slovakia, all participants from the first WBHF 3vs3 event in Bratislava, Slovakia. These nations will be joined by other nations such as Greece, India, Italy, Portugal, United States of America, Italy, Portugal and more should be well represented and will offer a great challenge to Team Canada, the defending 3vs3 champions.

The event is planning to host a total of 30 teams in both Men’s and Women’s divisions as well as Master’s O40 (born in 1976 or earlier) for both men and women.  Therefore, it should be the biggest world ball hockey championship yet to be organized.

Domenic Di Gironimo, President of the WBHF, ‘to the players around the world who love this sport I encourage you to participate as this event will be spectacular with the Coupe Burrows Cup overseeing the tournament.’

A press conference will be organized shortly where all details surrounding the WC2016 will be revealed.  A special thank you to Nolan and Shark media & sport for the development of the 3vs3 WC2016 logo.

We wish to thank all the players and partners that have supported the Coupe Burrows Cup since its inception in 2011.  This promises to be a wonderful event for all involved and feel this is a historical nomination which belongs to everyone that is part of the 3vs3.

We look forward to welcoming the World to Montreal in 2016!

CANADA – WORLD 4 X 4 CHAMPIONS

Ball or Dek Hockey has different variations of the sport in 4 + 1, 5 + 1 and the recently competed 4 +1 (4 on 4) version that is played throughout Europe, Asia and Canada (dek hockey). The 4 on 4 version is Europe and Asia is growing due to the ease of comprising rosters which generally consist of 12-16 players and the game is played on a smaller surface.

In Canada and specifically Quebec, the 4 on 4 version is played in numerous communities hosting leagues and tournaments. There is a passion for dek hockey in Quebec and Team Canada was lead by captain, Patric Ducharme and Simon LeBlanc, Coupe Burrows and General Manager, Daniel De Angelis, DDA Sports Marketing to comprise the team.

The World Ball Hockey Federation 4 x 4 Championships were hosted in Bratislava, Slovakia, the home to the Stastny Brothers, November 18 to 22 and Canada was recognized by everyone in attendance for their quality and execution of play and for his exemplary attitude for the sport and opposition.

The General Manager, Daniel De Angelis, took the challenge to put together a team which would have all the characteristics for a championship team. With the help of the leaders of the Burrows Cup, Patrick Ducharme and Simon Leblanc, they began the project last May, setting up the formation of the Canadian team made up of players from the dek hockey community.

They achieved their target goal. In addition to winning all eight games they drew the attention of other countries for their quality of execution and exemplary attitude.

"We are masters of our sport and caliber, but we did not know what to expect. But it was very nice, everyone stayed focused. We had many comment and Team Russia among others came to us to thank us for having taught them things, De Angelis commented yesterday after its 10-2 victory troops against the host club in the final.

"We build the team with key emphasis of teamwork, respect and strength."

Despite appearances, the opposition was raised their game. "The game was fast, the opposition was prepared. We had to work as a team to win and we were well supported, stated the MVP of the tournament, Steve Proulx. Many of us had never been to Europe and had to adapt. The victory will remain my fondest memory. "

"The Slovakian team was big, tall and strong but has played mostly five against five on the bug rink and the Russian team consisted mostly ice hockey players from the second and third divisions but they played with speed and power, "said De Angelis.

It was a difficult time as our team arrived following the terrorist attacks in Paris and we quickly noticed some changes.

"Security was tightened at the airport and saw the entire solidarity with the French. In Slovakia, there were flowers everywhere outside the embassy, "said De Angelis.

Yannick Labonte who scored a hat trick in the World Cup final commented, "here in Slovakia, tournaments are more festive and it has been welcomed. There would have been more than 35,000 viewings on the internet for our semi-final against the Czech Republic on Saturday, said the author of a round the final cap.”

The holding of this World Championship has been successful, its promoters could recur in 2016. It is quite possible that everything takes place in the Canada and in the Belle Province, a sign that the dek hockey is growing.

"Dek Hockey is a beautiful sport that is booming" said De Angelis.

Canada has won the inaugural World 4 x 4 Championship and with the vision of Patric Ducharme, Simon LeBlanc and Daniel De Angelis the sport will grow in Quebec and throughout Canada.

JTC - Inaugural Prospects Camp

Brampton, Canada - All roads lead to Brampton for the top U16 & U18 prospects for the JTC program.

The destination of their pilgrimage which took place on a Saturday, July 25 in Brampton attracted 80 players.   The Prospects Camp featured rigorous series of skill assessment drills inserted throughout the four practices followed by four scrimmages.

Scott Jacobi, General Manager, who organized the camp, said, “we have representation from 14 centres which will assist in growing the sport.” He continued, “interest in the camp will grow in future years and expanded as the sport grows.”  Jacobi continued, “it’s a ‘show me what you got’ type of situation.”

“We have always used tournaments for the selection process, but this brings in the best players, as we have one location and all the scouts have been brought in.  We have a captive audience and they can all watch and measure the skills of the players.  This camp was about opportunity.”

“Ball Hockey is a great game but there isn’t enough opportunity for some smaller centre’s” Jacobi said. “These players all think about playing the game they love and the passion level is consistent among all the prospects.  This is the national team, if they can get the opportunity, why not?”

Stephen Dockerty, JTC High Performance Director, “athletes are among the most focused people there are and many do not realize that they are among the next generation of leaders. We see this camp in helping them attain an experience through playing the sport they love and opportunity of helping shape this next generation of leaders. Giving them an opportunity to play somewhere is just part of the building blocks to their future and for our own future generations.”

The teams will be participating at the World Ball Hockey Federation Championships the week of June 26 to July 3 in Prague, Czech Republic along with the U20 team.
